The band is comprised of vocalist Sam Melo, electric guitarist Ethan Goodpaster, drummer Jess Haney, bassist Charlie Holt, and guitarist Darrick Keller. The band first formed in 2013 and released their debut EP titled Seven + Mary that same year. After the release of their second EP RKS in 2015, the band spent time performing at music festivals like Austin City Limits Festival, Bonnaroo, and Hopscotch.

Rainbow Kitten Surprise released their highly successful album How To: Friend, Love, Freefall in 2018, which contained 13 songs filled with deep lyrics and melodic guitar sounds. The album’s single “Fever Pitch” hit number 34 on Billboard’s Alternative Song chart and following its release, the band promoted it with a North American tour. In 2019, they released their album Mary (B Sides) and also performed a sold-out show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre. Rainbow Kitten Surprise has stated that some of their greatest musical influence has come from bands like Modest Mouse and Kings of Leon.
