There was discussion about having Louisville as a candidate city for an expansion team in the NWSL since 2018. The team was officially announced on October 22, 2019 and that the team would begin play in 2022.  The team briefly tried to name the team Proof Louisville FC in a nod to the local bourbon whiskey but received a mixed reaction to the name.

The club made their debut in 2021 in the NWSL Challenge Cup under head coach Christy Holly. He had previously been the head coach of Sky Blue FC. The team made their home debut against Kansas City NWSL on May 15, 2021.
