The team was formed in 2006 under the name Jersey Sky Blue, but within a few years came to be known as Sky Blue FC. The team is one of the first members of the National Women's Soccer League and played in the Women's Professional Soccer for three years starting in 2009. Sky Blue underwent another name change in 2020, and is now known as NJ/NY Gotham FC. They are colloquially referred to by fans and commentators as Gotham FC.
Women’s soccer saw an exceptional boom in popularity in the 1990s, and the Women's United Soccer Association was formed. The association represented the first professional women's league in the United States. Massachusetts, New York and New Jersey were chosen as the inaugural participants in the first professional season.

Sky Blue/Gotham FC had a difficult first season, but achieved upset victories against Washington and Saint Louis and made it to the 2009 championship game. They won the championship with a last-minute goal against Los Angeles, a moment which has been hailed by commentators as the "all-time underdog story" of women’s soccer. The team’s continued success earned them two separate invitations to the White House from then-President Barack Obama.
