The team played their first game in 1998. Though they struggled heavily throughout the season and only achieved a 1:3 overall win/loss ratio, the team nevertheless went on to win both the Central Division and Eastern Conference championships that year. The team moved to the city of St. Catharines at the beginning of 2007.

After the move, the IceDogs began at last to find their rhythm. They became the top team in the Ontario Hockey League in terms of fan attendance and qualified for the playoffs every season until 2014. The St. Catharines team included a number of future NHL stars, the most noteworthy being Mark Visentin, Dougie Hamilton and Andrew Agozzino.
