As a teenager, he drew inspiration from Michael Jackson, John Mayer and Vince Gill, artists who would heavily influence his later sound. Tenpenny then studied music business at Middle Tennessee State University. 

In 2015 the artist released his debut album Black Crow, a collaboration with the bluegrass band The SteelDrivers. Tenpenny rose to national attention, however, following the release of “If the Boot Fits” with Granger Smith, which was a top ten hit on the Country Airplay chart. In 2017 he released his EP Linden Ave, which sold more than 2,000 copies in its first week and charted at number six on Billboard’s Heatseekers Albums. 

In 2018 Tenpenny released his most well-known single, “Drunk Me,” which was a number two hit on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. Later that year he released his sophomore album Telling All My Secrets, which reached the top of the Billboard 200.
