It opened in February 2001. Before opening, the building had to overcome historic flood damage and a redesign to raise the floor and a collapsed roof. The Alerus Center is named after Alerus Financial, which purchased the naming rights for 20 years.

Before opening, it was known as Aurora Events Center. Past concerts have included performances by the Backstreet Boys and KISS.
