The orchestra traces its origins to 1972, and in 1997 became the resident ensemble of Mississauga Living Arts Centre. Despite humble beginnings, the Mississauga Symphony Orchestra has grown in size and stature significantly since its inception. The orchestra is now designated one of Mississauga’s six pillars of art and culture.
The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra is led by director and conductor Denis Mastromonaco, who has served with the group since 2013. Mastromonaco had previously enjoyed success leading the Orchard Park Orchestra, West Bohemian National Orchestra and National Academy Orchestra of Canada. He has collaborated with a slew of high-profile conductors such as Jorma Panula, Lothar Zagrosek and Salvador mas Conde. Mastromonaco has won the Emme Contestabile Prize in Orchestral Conducting and the Ontario Service Medal.
In 2013 the ensemble also founded the Mississauga Symphony Youth Orchestra, which plays a number of traditional classical and popular pieces. The Mississauga Symphony Orchestra is well-known for its outreach and education initiatives, scouting local talent and providing solo performance opportunities, commissions and mentorships.
