Maryland lacrosse was first played as a club sport in 1895. In those years, it competed against other club teams from schools such as Harvard, Cornell, Penn State and John Hopkins. It became a varsity intercollegiate sport in 1924, with its inaugural coach as a varsity team being R.V. Truitt and competing in the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse League.
In their first game in the league, the Terrapins defeated Navy, snapping a 46-game winning streak. In their second game in the USILL, the team defeated undefeated Southern Division Champions 4-2. The team won the Southern Division for the first time in 1925.
