The club secured player-related assets from the Utah Royals FC, which ceased operations earlier in the year, and played its first match the following April in the Challenge Cup. The club was referred to as Kansas City NWSL for the first season before announcing permanent name and crest in its final home match.
Kansas City originally had an NWSL franchise when the league was founded and won two titles as FC Kansas City. The team ceased operations in 2017 and players were allocated to Utah Royals. FC Kansas City general manager Huw Williams was tabbed as the new squad’s first head coach and the team played at Legend’s Field, which was shared with the American Association champion Kansas City Monarchs baseball team.
The inaugural roster included World Cup champions Desiree Scott of Canada and Amy Rodriguez of the United States. Other international competitors included Scotland’s Rachel Corsie, Argentina’s Mariana Larroquette and Portugal’s Jessica Silva.

Current home games are played at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kan., which is shared with Sporting KC of the MLS. The Current will move into their own stadium in 2024 in Kansas City, Mo. When announced, it was the first women’s soccer-specific facility in the country.
