It was only after a vocal performance at a talent show was widely praised that he made the jump and started working with producer Mike Schultz while at Columbia College Chicago - where he was studying for a degree. They worked closely together on material for his debut self-titled album, which would eventually be released on the Def Jam label in 2009.

It was perhaps his first single from the album that made R&B fans sit up and take notice, when Birthday Sex hit the Billboard R&B singles chart, hitting the top 10 within a few months and eventually reaching the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. In addition to being the face of a public school initiative in Chicago, Felton also gained recognition on the awards circuit with nominations at both the Music of Black Origin Awards (MOBO Awards) and American Music Awards in 2009.
