Formed by brothers Calvin and Remus Choy and fellow singer Edmond So during their school years, Hong Kong pop trio Grasshopper went on to officially crystallise their status as a band in 1985. Placing second in the New Talent Singing Awards the same year, the Cantonese-speaking group impressed judge Anita Mui enough to be invited into her posse as supporting musicians, appearing onstage as backing singers and dancers at her live shows.
Enjoying their newfound exposure, the group promptly penned a self-titled debut album, which arrived in 1988 via Polygram. Spawning a hit in “暫停．開始過”, which reached number five on the Hong Kong Commercial Radio charts, it marked the start of a prolific run of LPs from the group, most of which were again self-titled and distinguished by fans simply by numbers.
By 1990, they had picked up a Hong Kong Commercial Radio award, an achievement which they would match for six consecutive years. That year, they also forayed into Mandarin-language albums to great success, shifting half a million copies of 限時專送ABC (Limited Time Special) and scoring a hit in the Grasshopper’s Club Broken Heart single “Ban Dian Xin”. Despite embarking on solo careers at the turn of the millennium, the group never officially disbanded, and returned in 2005 with a string of live performances.
In 2017, the group were nominated for a coveted Golden Melody Award for the first time with their Mandopop album Music Walker. Get your tickets before they sell out!
