Goodwin was born in 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y., and became interested in politics at a young age. In 1964 she received the Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to support her graduate studies, going on to earn a doctorate in government from Harvard University.
In the late ‘60s, Goodwin was recruited for the White House staff of President Lyndon Johnson, where she focused on anti-poverty efforts. In the ‘70s she taught government at Harvard, then published her first book Lyndon Johnson and the American Dream, which became a New York Times bestseller.
Goodwin went on to enjoy a successful literary career, earning the 1995 Pulitzer Prize for her book No Ordinary Time: Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt and the Home Front During World War II. Her 2005 release, Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln, would later be adapted into the Academy Award-nominated film Lincoln directed by Steven Speilberg.
