It grew from a grassroots effort to revitalize sports in downtown Detroit. The club’s motto is “Passion for Our City, Passion for the Game.” Detroit City FC Women compete in the USL W League. The league was founded in May 2022 and is the successor of the former women’s amateur soccer league, the USL W-League.
The team owes its existence to the Detroit City Futbol League. The DCFL was a co-ed recreational league that brought together talented soccer players from various Detroit neighborhoods. It provided the beginnings of not only the women’s team but also the Detroit City FC team that competes in the USL Championship league.
Salvatore Piraine was named the first coach of the women’s squad in 2019. The inaugural team was formed after trying out over sixty women from the Detroit area. The first Detroit City FC Women tickets were available for purchase at their match against Midwest United FC in July 2020. At the end of their inaugural season, the DCFC women faced off against Midwest United FC in the UWS Stadium Showcase Final. Detroit City FC was unable to make it a season sweep and fell to Midwest United FC 2-1.
