In high school, Taborn played in a number of progressive rock and jazz fusion bands, where his love for jazz was born.
While in school at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, the artist joined James Carter’s band, contributing to a number of albums beginning with JC on the Set in 1993. Taborn rose to national attention through his 2001 sophomore solo album Light Made Lighter, which earned rave reviews from publications like the Los Angeles Times and garnered comparisons to jazz greats like Matthew Shipp and Thelonious Monk. Taborn has since earned numerous awards and accolades including the North Sea Jazz Festival’s Paul Acket Award, JazzTimes’ Best Piano Player Award and the Jazz Journalists Association’s Pianist of the Year Award.
