The team was a founding member of the Women’s Professional Soccer League. They played in the WPL for the 2009 and 2010 seasons. The team left the league because of the WPL’s financial issues and joined the Women’s Premier Soccer League in 2011.  In 2012, the Red Stars helped create the Women’s Premier Soccer League Elite, which functioned as a bridge from the WPSL to the National Women’s Soccer League.  In 2013, the team joined the NWSL.

The Red Stars first played their home games at Toyota Park, a 20,000 seat arena that used to also be the home of The Chicago Fire FC men’s team.  From 2011-2015, the team used the 3000 seat Village of Lisle-Benedictine University Sports Complex. However, in 2012, Lisle-Benedictine college was doing some renovations. During that time, the team played some matches at the Concordia University Chicago Athletic Complex in River Forest and at the Lakeside Athletic Field at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois. In December 2015, the team moved back to Toyota Park.
