Born in Grand Rapids in 1962, Cage developed an interest in gospel music as a teenager. Drawing on influences such as Thomas Whitfield and Rev. Donald Vails, he went on to study at Morehouse College in Atlanta. During his time at the college, Cage performed frequently with the Morehouse College Glee Club. 

In the mid-90s, Cage was signed to the Atlanta International label, through which he released the albums Transparent in Your Presence and Dwell Among Us with his group Byron Cage & Purpose. Though the artist found moderate success leading the group, he would rise to fame through his solo career in the early 2000s. In 2004 he released his debut solo album Live at New Birth Cathedral, for which he won five separate Stellar Awards later that year.
