In 1955 in the redwood region north of San Francisco, a multiracial girl grew up in a mostly white town where residents mix their dialect with Boontling's historical style. As the first-ever orphaned clairvoyant in this town, Bulrusher felt like an outcast even among all these unusual people: her adopted schoolmaster and madam run a brothel with strict discipline; a logger shows passion for horses while also having strong feelings towards women, along with the guitar-slinging boy after her heart. She finds a new sense of self when a black girl from Alabama arrives in her town, just as she thinks that the world might close in on her. This drama, performed by a new, exciting voice with passion, lyricism, and plenty of down-home humor, is an unforgettable experience.
