Brownstone began in the early 90s in Los Angeles with founding members Monica “Mimi” Doby, Charmayne “Maxee” Maxwell, and Nichole “Nicci” Gilbert. They were the first all-female group signed to Michael Jackson’s MJJ Music record label and quickly gained a large following with the hit singles “If You Love Me” and “Grapevyne.” Their debut album From the Bottom Up earned them a Billboard Music Award and Grammy nomination as well as several other nominations. In 1995 Doby left the group and they went through several member changes including Kymberli Wright and Teisha Brown trying to find the best fit.

In 2015 Charmayne Maxwell died from an accidental fall, which hit the group hard. In 2019 they celebrated a successful 25-year reunion of their first album with the Essence Festival. Now, reinvented as The Brownstone Experience in 2020, the group includes Teisha J. Lott and newcomer Arin Jackson. They have performed at hugely popular R&B showcase events such as Valentine’s Love Jam with Tyrese and Ginuwine.
