Kelley grew up enjoying sports and music. While attending college at Daytona State College and Florida State University, Kelley was being looked at by scouts while he split his time writing music and playing baseball. He was drafted by the Florida Marlins. While riding the bench in the Marlins minor league system, he began to write music seriously and decided to attend Belmont University, a private Christian college in Nashville, Tenn.

While at Belmont, Kelley grew close with fellow student Tyler Hubbard and they began to write songs and perform together in the Nashville music scene. They decided to play music full-time in 2009 and began to tour throughout the South. Their debut EP, Anything Like Me, was released in 2010. The two have continued to release albums every couple of years since then.
Kelley announced in 2021 that he also wanted to perform as a solo artist, referring to himself as a Beach Cowboy. His solo debut was the EP Wave Pack, released in April of 2021. The songs on the EP were included in the studio album Sunshine State of Mind, which was released in June of 2021.
