Following the eruption of the Tuareg Rebellion in 1990, he, along with his father and grandmother, had to abandon their home and find refuge in neighboring Algeria. It was during these difficult times, however, where fortune found him in the most unexpected way. After visiting relatives, who had by chance left behind a guitar, Bombino took it upon himself to teach himself the instrument. Seeking an outlet to escape the chaos around him, he found music to be not only a dependable source of comfort but also a symbol of rebellion that would become the centerpiece of his musical philosophy.
His music is primarily sung in his native tongue of Tamasheq, rooted strongly in the geopolitical conflicts of Turag while utilizing exhilarating jams to embody the spirit of resistance and rebellion which continuously inspires him. With the release of his 2011 album Agadez, Bombino's status as one of Africa's most popular young guitarists became common knowledge around the world, while Bombino tickets became a must-have almost overnight.
