This performing arts group was formed by classmates at the George Slundika School in Bulawayo, which is the capital of the Ndebele-speaking region. The group took the name from the Black Umfolosi Regiment, which was part of the Zulu revolutionaries of the 19th century. This group performs with an 18-piece ensemble but also sometimes includes an elaborate 900-person choir to accompany them. In 1994, the group was named the “Most Popular Artist” by Canada’s Commonwealth Games. The group has toured throughout Europe, Australia and all over North America.
Black Umfolosi released their first album in 1990, entitled Unity. They followed that up with Festival-Umdlalo three years later. They released Umhlaba in 2015, which features the hit song “Basijabulela.” Five years later, Black Umfolosi released Earth Song in 2020.
