After encountering the music of artists like Bob Dylan, her passion for the genre grew and she went on to study at the New England Conservatory of Music. She formed the band Crooked Still with fellow music students Corey DiMario, Rushad Eggleston and Gregory Liszt. The group gained popularity as they played various venues in Boston, and were eventually invited to perform at the Newport Folk Festival and the Falcon Ridge Folk Festival in 2004. They released their first album, Hop High, the same year. They released another album in ‘06, Shaken by a Low Sound, before changing members. The band now consists of O’Donovan, DiMario, Liszt and new members Tristan Clarridge and Brittany Haas. They released the album Still Crooked in 2008.
Aoife O’Donovan created another band, Sometimes Why, in 2005. The members include O’Donovan as well as Kristin Andreassen and Ruth Ungar Merenda. O’Donovan released her first solo recording in 2010, Blue Light. She has been a vocalist for cellist Yo-Yo Ma and toured extensively with Sara Watkins of Nickel Creek. O’Donovan and Watkins won a Grammy Award for Best American Roots Song for their “I’m With Her” collaboration in 2015.
