The Grassroots was founded in 1965 by P.F. Sloan and Steve Barri, who were attempting to join the folk-rock movement. They changed their name to the Grass Roots when they sent the song “Where Were You When I Needed You,” to radio stations in the San Francisco area. The group would have two gold albums and three Top Ten hits as well as six Top 20 songs and hit the Top 40 14 times.

The group formed in 1966 and was very successful in their first year, having five Top 40 hits. The group disbanded in 1970 but re-formed in 1980 and are still touring in the United States.
Memphis blue-eyed soul group The Box Tops was created in 1967. The band’s biggest hits were “The Letter,” “Cry Like a Baby” and “Soul Deep.”
