He rose to fame in 2020 through his album On the Tender Spot of Every Calloused Moment, which earned a Grammy nod for Best Instrumental Jazz Album. 

Akinmusire was born in Oakland, Calif., in 1984 and as a teenager, he played in the Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble. His performances with the group attracted the attention of well-known saxophonist Steve Coleman. Coleman promptly hired Akinmusire to tour with his band Five Elements, and the young artist’s professional career began. 

Following the tour, Akinmusire went on to study at the Manhattan School of Music, the University of Southern California and the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. He made waves in 2007 when he won the Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Solo Competition. Akinmusire released his debut album Prelude… to Cora shortly afterward, making a name for himself in the avant-garde jazz scene. He has since collaborated with artists as varied as Aaron Parks and Kendrick Lamar and won the DownBeat Critics Poll for Jazz Artist of the Year.
