The pair fell in love at a young age and started playing music together around Dublin while teaching at St. Oliver Plunkett primary school. Eventually, they found support and quit teaching as they joined with Ciarán Curran (bouzouki) and Mark Kelly (guitar)who still perform with the group. They released the album Altan in 1987, named after a lake in Ireland that is also Irish for stream. Shortly after the group adopted the name and began working on their official debut Horse with a Heart released in 1989. It would lead the way for 1990s Red Crow which became the first of three consecutive albums to win the "Celtic/British Isles Album of the Year" award from NAIRD.
Establishing themselves as an international sensation, Altan tickets are sought after around the world. As the group gained notoriety Frankie Kennedy, unfortunately, developed Ewing’s sarcoma, a form of cancer. Kennedy would perform through his treatment and help the group get signed with Virgin Records before he passed away in September of 1994. The band continued to tour following Kennedy’s wishes and have gone on to produce 18 studio albums. From performing for President Bill Clinton to working along with artists like Dolly Parton, Altan is recognized as one of Irelands greatest exports.
