Born Melanie Anne Safka, Melanie is an American singer-songwriter from Queens, New York whose career began in the 1960s and her music is still prevalent today. Melanie started her career by mainly playing small local clubs like The Inkwell coffee house in New Jersey or The Bitter End in Greenwich Village.
Melanie first saw mainstream success with the release of her single titled “Bobo’s Party” which reached number 1 on the European charts in 1969. Later in 1969, Melanie’s European popularity eventually reached the United States where she would be one of only three female soloists to perform at the historic Woodstock Festival. Throughout the early 1970s, Melanie’s iconic rise to fame afforded her the opportunity to play some of the biggest musical events in history like the Powder Ridge Rock Festival, the Strawberry Fields Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival and the Glastonbury Fayer. In 1972 she recorded another hit record titled “Brand New Key” which immediately became a hit both in the US and abroad. “Brand New Key” eventually sold over three million copies worldwide.
To date, Melanie has released 42 albums. Songs like “Lay Down,” “Brand New Key,” “What Have They Done to My Song Ma,” “Beautiful People” and “I Really Loved Harold” have become cult classics and have been covered by some of the biggest stars in history like Dolly Parton, Cher and even Ray Charles.
