Martin, born in 1976 in Amherst, Mass., has had a long career within the Metal band sphere, but not as a musician. He started as an illustrator and graphic designer, first for Bonded by Blood in 2006 then branching out to other prominent death metal bands like Impalers, Insinnerator and Mutagenocide. Martin wanted to make a thrash metal with a slightly goofy old-school vibe, so he started this solo project on a lark. This lark turned into two full-length albums Necromatic Maelstrom and Toxic Zombie Onslaught released in 2007 and 2008 respectively. On both these albums, Martin played all the instruments, wrote all the music, and provided all the vocals. As the band’s popularity grew, he knew he needed a full band, if he wanted to tour.
The Lich King members originally came from a band called Ages Ago. Lich King has gone through a few line-up changes but two of the original members, other than Martin, are still with the band, Brian Westbrook on drums and Joe Nickerson on guitars. The current lineup also includes Nick Timney on lead guitar, Mike Dreher on bass, and Zachary Smith on lead vocals, with Martin now primary the band’s songwriter. They have released another four albums World Gone Dead (2010), Super Retro Thrash (2011), Born of the Bomb (2012), and most recently The Omniclasm (2017), as well as a few singles and EPs.
