The first ceremony took place on February 23, 1970, and was tentatively labeled the Gold Leaf Awards. More than a year after the show, RPM magazine invited its readers to suggest new names for the group. With the help of the fans, the Juno Awards was named in honor of Pierre Juneau, the first president of the Canadian Radio-Television and Telecommunications commission. In 1974, Canadian Music Awards Association representatives of the music industry who established the Junos created and renamed it in 1975.
