As a teen, he took first place three times in the junior division of the national Old-time Fiddlers Contest in Weiser, ID. In 1970 Sam Bush moved to Louisville and joined the Bluegrass Alliance. This band later dissolved and reformed as the New Grass Revival.

New Grass Revival went through many changes. Sam was eventually the only original member that remained. In 1984 Sam Bush released his first solo album, Late As Usual. Sam, along with Bela Fleck, Mark O’Connor, Jerry Douglas and Edgar Meyer, joined forces in 1989 to put together an all-star bluegrass band, Strength In Numbers. They performed at the Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado. After New Grass Revival faded, Sam joined Emmylou Harris’ Nash Ramblers. He toured and recorded with her for the next 5 years.

Sam Bush has been a sideman for Lyle Lovett and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones. His second solo album, Glamour & Girls, was released in 1996. A year later, he and the New Grass Revival band reunited to back up Garth Brooks on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.
