Batiste was born in Louisiana to a musical family and began playing the drums in his family’s band at the age of eight. He then learned the piano and released his debut album Times in New Orleans before he was 18.

The artist went on to attend the Juilliard School in the early 2000s, and by 2006 had already toured widely on the international stage. Batiste is known for his community outreach and has led numerous music classes and workshops for inner-city youth. He has recorded with several legendary artists including Prince, Roy Hargrove and Stevie Wonder.

Batiste formed the band Stay Human with friends he made at the Juilliard School, and the group became known for their enthusiastic audience interaction. In 2015 Stay Human became the house band for The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, where they remain today.

He has earned numerous accolades, including a Grammy nomination for his cover of “St. James Infirmary Blues” in 2019. Batiste is the music director for the Atlantic and won an Academy Award for his work composing the score for the 2020 film Soul.
