The USHL is the top junior ice hockey league in the United States. While the Steel officially were recognized in 2000, their team’s history dates back to 1996. The Fargo-Moorhead Ice Sharks moved to Bensenville, Illinois in 1996 and rebranded as the Steel.
USHL teams compete for the Clark Cup which is the trophy awarded to the top team each postseason. Chicago took home their first Clark Cup in 2017. They defeated the Sioux City Musketeers 2-1 in the final game of the five-game series. The win brought attention to head coach Dan Muse who was poached by the Nashville Predators of the NHL the following year.
The Steel also frequently vie for the Anderson Cup, which is awarded to the top team during the regular season. Chicago Steel tickets purchased during the 2019-20 season brought fans to the team's first Anderson Cup victory. The Steel made it two straight after taking home the Anderson Cup in the 2020-21 season.
