Born in Puerto Rico, the singer and bandleader participated in his first concert during his teenage years and got his start working with popular salsa outfit Mario Ortiz Orchestra, followed by the La Grande Orchestra. Santa Rosa’s career continued to rise in the 1980s, during which he worked with a number of different bands and orchestras, including the Puerto Rican All-Stars, the Tommy Olivencia Orchestra, and the Willie Rosario Orchestra. Santa Rosa’s first record deal came in 1986 after he formed his own band and began working with Combo Records. A number of his songs quickly became certified hits, including “Good Vibrations,” “De Amor y salsa,” and “Perspectiva.”
Those who purchased Gilberto Santa Rosa tickets for his first performance at Carnegie Hall witnessed history in action, as Santa Rosa was the first artist to perform tropical salsa at the historic venue. The live performance was taped and released as an album in 1995 titled En Vivo Desde el Carnegie Hall. Flash forward to 2020, and Gilberto Santa Rosa has released just shy of 30 albums and is known as “El Caballero de la Salsa” for his contributions to the mainstream success of salsa music. Other accolades include six Grammy awards and another eighteen nominations, as well as a Guinness world record for most No. 1s on Billboard’s Tropical Albums chart.
With a career that recently hit an impressive 40-year milestone, Santa Rosa shows no signs of slowing down. His most recent album 40… Y Contando En Vivo Desde Puerto Rico was released in 2019.
