Four years after exposing the affair, Emma meets Jerry to say to him that her marriage to Robert is over. She lies to Jerry and tells him that she had to reveal the truth to Robert and that he now knows of the affair when he’s known about it for the last four years.
Pinter uses reverse chronology by starting the opening scene of the play after the affair had already ended in 1977 and the final scene is where the affair began in 1968.
