In 1955, the track was the site of Adios Harry, running his “miracle mile,” finishing the race in 1:55, which was a record that was not broken for 18 years. Due to competition from other tracks such as Meadowlands Racetrack, which paid larger purses as well as the advent of Native American tribes establishing bingo halls on their lands, the track began to wane in popularity and was in danger of closing down in 2001.
