Unitas Stadium broke ground in 1976 and was opened on September 9, 1979, with the Towson Tigers football team's final season of Division III. It was first named Townson Stadium until 1983 when it was renamed after coach and athletic director Donald "Doc" Minnegan. Minnegan Stadium then was renamed one last time to Unitas Stadium for the Baltimore Colts Hall of Fame quarterback Johnny Unitas, after he tried to find a corporate sponsor for the stadium, he passed unexpectedly which led to his widow holding a fundraiser for the stadium in his honor.
