The Tower Theatre for the Performing Arts, usually just referred to as the Tower Theatre is located in Fresno, California, and staged its inaugural performance on December 14, 1939, with a private showing of Balalaika. The distinctive style of the theatre is Streamline Moderne and was designed by S. Charles Lee, who had previously designed the Ritz Theater in Westwood, Los Angeles.
The tower for the theatre was inspired by the Star Pylon which was unveiled at the 1939 New York World’s Fair, and had been erected to symbolize the “force of electricity.” The venue was converted into a cinema in 1954. To accommodate its use as a cinema, the proscenium stage was removed.
