The club was formed in 1935 with land donated by oil magnate Waite Phillips, who also sponsored the club due to a request by Bill Warren and Cecil Canary.
Phillips had initially been skeptical but when 150 pledges of $1000 were collected he got behind the project. The founding members of the club paid for its construction. The clubhouse itself was designed by local architects John Duncan Forsyth and Donald McCormick in the style of an “English Country Manor” and debuted on October 17, 1936.
