The house was the brainchild of local businessman and philanthropist William Smith, who wanted it utilized to attract culture and entertainment to the area.

Extensive renovations were performed on the theater in 1994 to return the theater’s exterior to its original 1894 look and feel along with the opulent look from the 1931 restoration on the inside.
