The building was originally constructed in 1911, designed by Bertie Crewe for the Melville brothers, and opened as the New Prince’s Theater, the last such one built in this famed theatrical district. By 1914 the name changed to the Prince’s Theatre. The name changed again, to the current Shaftesbury Theater, in 1962 when Charles Clore and EMI purchased the building from Television Wales and West.

The theatre has undergone several minor renovations throughout its long history leaving the current capacity at 1,416 seats, though the original capacity is unknown. A major renovation began in 2010 restoring the original Edwardian canopy. In 2013, the theater’s fly town was updated to fit with modern construction standards.
