The auditorium was designed by the architectural firm Foster and Partners with a construction cost of 30 million Euros. It earned the nickname “Armadillo” as the venue looks similar to that of the New World Placental mammal. It has similarly been compared, in appearance, to the Sydney Opera House in Australia, but the inspiration is not the case as it was more about the interlocking series of ship’s hulls, which pays homage to the shipbuilding heritage of the city of Clyde.
