Before the construction of the stadium, Cornell played at Percy Field. Willard Straight donated $100,000 to Cornell after the death of his friend, head football coach Henry Schoellkopf, in 1912, towards the construction of Schoellkopf Memorial Hall, which was completed in 1913. This caused the Schoellkopf family and the fraternity Zeta Psi to donate funds toward a field to commemorate Jacob Schoellkopf, who had been responsible for harnessing the hydroelectric power of Niagara Falls. The stadium was completed in 1915

Since then, the stadium has had numerous updates and renovations to keep it current. A floodlight system was installed by General Electric in 1920. In 1924, the original stands on the east side of the field were replaced with what is called the “Crescent,” which increased the seating from 9,000 to approximately 21,500.
Steel bleachers were installed on the west side of the field in 1947. Other changes include the artificial turf on the field being replaced multiple times, including in 2008.
