The Roy Stewart Stadium broke ground in 1972 and replaced the old Cutchin Stadium located on the North end of campus. The stadium opened a year later on September 15, 1973, when the Racers faced the Western Carolina University's Catamounts. The Racers edged out the win on their new field with a final score of 27-25. The stadium was designed by Lee Potter Smith Associates and was structurally engineered by Ted F. Billington Consulting Engineers. The stadium was named after the longtime head coach and athletic director, Roy Stewart.
