Roos Field broke ground in 1966 and opened a year later. It was designed by the architectural firm T.W. Clark Construction LLC with a cost of $1.5 million to build. It was originally named Woodward field to honor Arthur Woodward, the former football and basketball coach of the Eagles. It was renamed in 2010 after the All-Pro NFL tackle and former alum, Michael Roos, who was a major donor to the Red Turf Project. The Red Turf project happened at the beginning of 2010, when the field's natural turf was replaced by red SprinTurf, making it the second college in the NCAA Division I football program to have a non-green turf. The Boise State Broncos have blue turf.
