Hasting Street and Main Street in the downtown eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The theatre was built to be the west coast hub of the Shaw Brothers world-spanning cinema business. The first movie shown was 12 Gold Medallions in 1971. When constructed the building had the latest in movie technology, a 10,000-foot theatre room, and could seat around 500 people. As the love of kung-fu movies dwindled by 1980, the Shaw Theatre had to close, and there it sat empty for over 25 years.
In 2009, David Duprey purchased the building and converted this former theater into a live music venue and renamed it the Rickshaw Theatre. The building can now hold about 1,000 concertgoers. As this venue became an integral part of the revitalization process of the area, in 2011 the business was purchased by Mo Tarmohamed. This state-of-the-art and award-winning stage has brought in acts from around the world and featured notable performances from the likes of Misfits, Dead Kennedys, Skinny Puppy, Dear Tick, and Ghostface Killah.
