The Grand Rapids Civic Ballet was established in 1971 and led by Artistic Director Sally Seven. In 1983, the Summerfest School of Grand Rapids was established as a school to prepare dancers for professional performance. The two merged to form the Grand Rapids Ballet company.
Through the efforts of the dance community, the Grand Rapids Ballet company bought a defunct bus station and renovated it into a dance space and school in 2000. The facility has enabled the company to institute programs such as the Dancers’ Theatre series as well as becoming a popular field trip destination for grade-schoolers, called “Escape to the Ballet.” Young visitors learn about the operation of a dance troupe in a vibrant and engaging way.
