The Peter Martin Wege Theatre is the resident hall of the Grand Rapids Ballet company, the only professional ballet troupe in the state of Michigan. The Grand Rapids Civic Ballet was established in 1971 and led by Artistic Director Sally Seven. In 1983, the Summerfest School of Grand Rapids was established as a school to prepare dancers for professional performance. The two merged to form the Grand Rapids Ballet company.

Through the efforts of the dance community, the Grand Rapids Ballet company bought a defunct bus station and renovated it into a dance space and school in 2000. The facility has enabled the company to institute programs such as the Dancers’ Theatre series as well as becoming a popular field trip destination for grade-schoolers, called “Escape to the Ballet.” Young visitors learn about the operation of a dance troupe in a vibrant and engaging way.
