Construction on the raceway was completed in 1964. It was named National Trail Raceway as that is what that stretch of U.S. Route 40 was called at the time. When the raceway was built, it was the fifth-largest dragstrip raceway in the United States. Wally Parks, the founder and head of the NHRA, decided to move the Springnationals to the raceway in 1972 due to drag racing’s popularity in central Ohio. The event was so popular that the gates to the raceway had to be closed while cars still sat on the highway lining up to get in.

Other notable moments include Shirley Muldowney becoming the first woman to win a national event in Top Fuel Dragster in 1976. In 1982, an all-female final occurred for the first time when Muldowney raced fellow female driver Lucille Lee at the raceway.

It has also been used for the Buick Nationals, the Mopar Nationals and the Night of Thunder, a showcase for jet cars and wheel standers. The raceway was the site for the Ohio High School Athletic Association state cross country running championships.
