The MSU Riley Center, also known as the Grand Opera House, is a conference space and performing arts venue in Meridian, Miss. Built by Levi Rothenberg and Israel Marks in 1889, the Riley Center is now owned and operated by Mississippi State University. The venue was entered into the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.
Originally intended to function as a hotel, the Riley Center was converted into an opera house halfway through its construction. The interior of the building was designed by J.B. McElfatrick, who had previously risen to fame through his work on the Metropolitan Opera House in Philadelphia and the National Theater in Washington, D.C. Within only a few years of the building’s completion, the Riley Center had enjoyed landmark productions of the era’s best plays such as The Gypsy Baron, The King’s Fool and Ghosts.
During the Great Depression, however, the venue fell into a state of disrepair. It would take until a community restoration initiative in the early 2000s for the Riley Center to return to its original appearance. Grab MSU Riley Center tickets today to enjoy a show at what is now one of the most in-demand venues in the region.
