The mall opened in September of 1959 and was an open-air shopping center. The mall was named after the Menlo Park neighborhood of Edison, the location of famed inventor Thomas Edison’s laboratory. A project to enclose the mall began in June 1966 and was completed in December 1967. The mall, after being enclosed, was quite dark as there were no skylights. The mall’s flooring was quite distinctive, with orange, patterns of black, yellow and white.
