The arena, which debuted in 1972, was designed by Frank Wallace, the architect of most of the buildings at ORU. The arena is named after local oilman John Mabee, whose foundation contributed $1 million towards the project.
The center was upgraded substantially in 2021, with improvements including new chairs for the arena, repainting the exterior blue along with blue glass panels. Infrastructure changes include an up-to-date sound system, digital screens, LED house lights and state-of-the-art wifi. In addition, new suites were constructed along with an adjacent smaller building called the Global Learning Center.

The stadium is home court for the Oral Robert’s Golden Eagles men’s and women’s basketball teams. The arena was inducted into the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame in 2013.
