Jerry Richardson Stadium broke ground on April 28, 2011, and finished two years later when the inaugural Green and White Spring game was held on April 20, 2013. The first major event and grand opening was on August 31, 2013, when the 49ers played the Campbell Fighting Games. Charlotte beat the Camels in a bloodbath with the final score being 52-7. The stadium is named after Hugh McColl and Jerry Richardson purchased the naming rights while the stadium was being built. Richardson gave another $10 million in donations two years later, which led to the stadium being renamed after the businessman. The stadium was designed by architectural groups DLR Group and Jenkins Peer Architects.
